Instructor “Shadows” Industry Pro in Preparation for New Program

J. F. Ingram State Technical College Automotive Mechanics instructor Shawn Moore spent time recently “shadowing” Rick Trammell, Senior Service Consultant at Jack Ingram Nissan in Montgomery, AL.

Moore, who has taught Automotive Mechanics at ISTC for 12 years, will be the instructor when the College launches its new Automotive Service Writer program later this year.

The program is the only one currently offered in the Alabama Community College System. Moore said students will learn basic automotive systems and technology, then combine that knowledge with strong customer service and communications skills, computer expertise and an understanding of logistics. “It will be challenging,” explained Moore, “but once they learn the basic components of the job, they will have the knowledge and tools to be successful.”

Trammell described service writing as an “excellent job”.  “The job can be challenging at times, but it comes with good pay and longevity,” he said. “There’s a big shortage of service advisors in the industry, and we are excited to be a part of the new opportunity at Ingram.”

Automotive Service Writer will be offered at the Tutwiler instructional site and is comprised of three stackable short-term certificates.
