Mr. John Harrison


Mr. John D. Harrison was appointed by Governor Robert Bentley in May 2005 as Superintendent of Banks for the State of Alabama Banking Department, and retired in June of 2016. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Harrison served as Director for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and is a former four-term mayor of Luverne, Alabama. 


            In 1980, Mr. Harrison assisted in opening First Citizens Bank in Luverne, and in 1983 was named president and chief executive officer.  He also served on the board of the Community Bankers Association of Alabama and is a former board president and secretary/treasurer.


            Mr. Harrison has been owner and president of Crenshaw Land and Timber Company for over 35 years, and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Alabama Forestry Association ForestFund.  He was a partner and vice president of C&H Trucking Co., Inc. and owner of Glenwood Woodyard, Inc. from 1976 to 1997.  In 2011, Mr. Harrison was honored by the Alabama Independent School Association’s Hall of Fame.  He received the Luverne Kiwanis Club’s George F. Hixon Award in 2002, and the Leadership Alabama, Class VI, in 1995. In 1992, he was honored as the Troy Alumnus of the Year, and was named Citizen of the Year by the Luverne – Crenshaw County Chamber of Commerce in 1991.


            In 1967, he graduated from Troy University with a double major in Business Administration and Marketing, and has served on the school’s Board of Trustees since 1995.  Mr. Harrison also currently serves on the Troy University Business Advisory Council, Luverne Emmaus Cemetery, and is a member of the Luverne Kiwanis Club, the Crenshaw County Rodeo Committee, the Crenshaw County Saddle Club, and the Crenshaw County Heart Association.  Mr. Harrison enjoys hunting, fishing, and is an avid spectator of high school and college sports.  He and his wife, Barbara, attend Faith Church in Florence, Alabama and have five children: Kelly Kelley, Alice Ann Battle, Patricia Stewart, William King, and David King.
