Mr. Jerry Kocan

Jerry A. Kocan is a native of Sharon, Pa. and graduated from Kennedy Christian High School. He earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University in 1982. He is currently the dealer principal at Four Star Freightliner, Inc., which employs more than 155 in the southeast United States.

After college graduation, Kocan went to work for Roadway Express in Atlanta but later accepted the opportunity to work with Caterpillar in their engine division. After two years, he earned the distinction as the No. 1 Truck Engine Account Manager in North America.  He then was promoted to Business Manager responsible for all Caterpillar Engine business in the State of Georgia.

In 1991, Kocan was recruited by Volvo/GM Heavy Truck Corporation to open and manage a factory branch (two stores) in Atlanta. He grew those two facilities to $100M in sales (profitably) annually and was recognized as both Volvo and GMC’s (medium duty) Top Performing Dealers not only in the southeast but nationally.

He was recruited by Freightliner Market Development Corporation in 1999 for an opportunity in Alabama as a Dealer Development Candidate.  It was then that Kocan bought the assets and assumed the locations of Freightliner dealerships in Montgomery and Dothan, Alabama from Daimler Trucks, North America.  These two locations were brought together in January of 2000.

Seeing a need for a service facility to support the customers in South Georgia, Kocan opened a Freightliner service facility in Tifton, Georgia in late 2001. In 2003, he opened an additional Freightliner store in Tallahassee, Florida. Fast forward to 2011, Kocan opened a dealership in Valdosta, Georgia followed by the opening of a sixth facility in Albany, Georgia in 2014.

Four Star Freightliner, Inc. is now the Southeast region’s leading heavy and medium duty truck dealer. All six Four Star Freightliner, Inc. locations also provide parts and service to truck owners. Kocan also owns Four Star Leasing LLC, the rental and leasing arm of Four Star Freightliner, Inc.

Because of the lack of diesel technicians, Kocan worked to create partnerships with two Alabama colleges, LBW Community College in Opp, Ala. and J.F. Ingram State Technical College in Deatsville, Ala. The goal was to train and hire technicians. The partnership with LBW has created opportunities for several students to receive scholarships and hands-on (paid) training from Four Star Freightliner. Kocan has donated several pieces of equipment to ISTC (transmissions, engines) so that the incarcerated students at that college will have up-to-date equipment to use during class. Kocan is also considering employment opportunities for recommended students upon their release.

Kocan serves on both Daimler Trucks North America National Dealer Council for Freightliner and Western Star Trucks, making him the only dealer to hold that distinction. He serves on the board of the Alabama Trucking Association and has served on the Georgia Motor Trucking Association since 1986. He has served as Chairman of his 20 Group for the past 8 years. He has served as vice president and treasurer of the Grand Sandestin Board in Sandestin, Florida since 2010.

Kocan is very supportive of the communities where his dealerships are located, often providing financial support to school and community programs. He is especially dedicated to supporting causes that his employees are directly connected to including the Chasity D. Barnes Memorial Scholarship, Visually Impaired People, Inc., Walk for Autism and a host of other causes.

In October 2014, Kocan was given the Patriot Award by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve under the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He was presented the award after receiving a nomination from a Four Star employee who, at the time, was serving in Iraq. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.

Kocan has been married for more than 23 years to Nancy Kocan and they have two daughters. Meredith is a senior nursing student at the University of Alabama. Samantha is a rising sophomore majoring in Broadcast Journalism at Troy University.
